Do you recommend to change the brake discs as well, when you replace the brake pads to ceramic pads?

For an immediate optimum brake-performance, we recommend to install new brake disc as well.  



Is ATE Ceramic a high-performance brake pad?

ATE Ceramic is not a high-performance brake pad. It is designed for normal driving. Ceramic brake pads should not be confused with those made of carbon fiber (reinforced silicon carbide), which are used together with ceramic composite brake disks in high-end sports cars and luxury cars.

Ceramic friction materials consist of ceramic fibers, fillers, binding agents and mild abrasives, among other substances. Their typical characteristics are light lining material, low noise in braking, low wear and low dust generation.



Is the braking performance of ATE Ceramic brake pads comparable to that of Original ATE or OE brake pads?

ATE Ceramic brake pads deliver maximum safety at the OEM level. Our tests have shown that even under extreme conditions, professional test drivers were unable to detect a difference in braking performance between ATE Ceramic brake pads and Original ATE or OE brake pads.

In addition, of course, all ATE Ceramic brake pads have been tested and certified to the ECE-R90 standard.



Are there ATE Ceramic brake pads for all kinds of cars?

ATE Ceramic offers a broad range of products for medium-sized and premium cars. In most cases ATE has sets for both the front and rear axles. The range is being continually expanded and can be seen here.



Can I use ATE Ceramic brake pads on only one axle?

Use on only one axle is possible. To minimize dust generation, however, ATE recommends installing ATE Ceramic brake pads on both axles together with new brake disks.

Where can I buy them?

Wherever ATE products are sold.



Do I have to register the pads with TÜV, the German safety standards authority?

No. All ATE Ceramic brake pads have been tested and certified to ECE-R90 and therefore do not have to be registered.



Do the pads have a General Operating Permit according to Section 20 of the German road traffic registration ordinance?

ATE Ceramic brake pads are ECE-R90-tested and therefore do not need a permit.



Does one get the same warranty with ATE Ceramic brake pads as with regular ATE pads?

Yes. There is no difference between Original ATE and ATE Ceramic pads in this respect.



Is the there same range of accessories for ATE Ceramic as with Original ATE?

Yes.



Why does ATE offer the Ceramic product line in addition to its well-established Original ATE products?

ATE Ceramic is a new product designed especially for drivers of medium-sized and premium cars who want outstanding brake performance and attach particular importance to the appearance of their vehicles. As a consequence, they want their rims to stay clean.



Have tests shown that rims really do stay cleaner with ATE Ceramic brake pads?

Yes, thorough testing has demonstrated that rims stay significantly cleaner when ATE Ceramic pads are used instead of conventional (“low met”) brake pads. This applies especially to everyday driving conditions.



What is the service life of ATE Ceramic brake pads as compared with conventional brake pads?

The service life of brake pads strongly depends on how they are used and what temperatures they are subjected to. In general, however, ATE Ceramic brake pads show less wear under normal driving conditions than conventional (“low met”) brake pads.



Does the use of ATE Ceramic brake pads have an effect on the service life of brake disks?

After ATE Ceramic brake pads have been used for a short time, a blue-gray “transfer film” consisting of very hard, wear-resistant carbides forms on the brake disk. As a consequence this transfer film, rather than the brake disk surface itself, is what does the braking. This substantially reduces wear on the disk.



In what ways are ATE Ceramic brake pads superior to conventional European brake pads (low mets)?

ATE Ceramic brake pads generate less dust than low-met brake pads. Moreover, they are quieter and last longer. ATE Ceramic pads make no compromises when it comes to safety and quality. In both respects they are at the OEM level.



Discoloration of Brake Disks with ATE Ceramic Pads and Use of New Brake Disks

A blue-gray layer (transfer layer) on the friction rings of the brake disk is normal for the use of ATE ceramic pads.

This layer is necessary for optimum effect of the brake pads, especially in terms of brake dust reduction.

We also recommend changing the brake disk whenever the pads are changed.

Run-in or used brake disks may always also have suffered prior damage, such as washout.This may lead to a combination of new ATE ceramic pads and a used brake disk not achieving an optimum performance result.
